Amber Griffin, a beautiful 27-year-old mother of two, disappeared in June 2020 after a fight with her boyfriend, Derek Horton. There was an alleged history of domestic violence against Amber, with her listed as the victim when Derek was charged with assault and domestic violence in 2019.
Amber's blood was found on all three levels of a house where she attended a party with her boyfriend on the night she disappeared, and her blood was found in the couple's car.
Her boyfriend told Amber's mom she just walked away from their home on the night in question, and he hasn't heard from her since. However, he was seen on video buying a shovel at a local hardware store the day after she went missing.
Amber's body has never been found.
Juwan Deering is a 50-year-old Detroit area man who was convicted in 2006 of felony murder and arson after a house fire in his neighborhood in 2000 resulted in the death of five children. The prosecution theory at the time was that he started the fire as an act of revenge against the children's father, who allegedly owed Mr. Deering $200 for crack cocaine.
There was no forensic evidence or eyewitnesses connecting Deering to the arson. In fact, the prosecutor admitted to the jury at trial that it was a circumstantial case. Three jailhouse informants, two of whom police put in the same cell as Mr. Deering to get information, testified at trial that he admitted to setting the fire, but he didn't mean to harm the kids. It would later be revealed that those snitches were given reduced sentences or had charges dropped for cooperating, even though the investigator and prosecutor denied this.
As of September 30, 2021, Mr. Deering's conviction has been overturned and he has been freed from prison after serving 15 years of a life sentence. The new prosecutor believes he did not get a fair trial, and there is an ongoing investigation related to the fire and potential prosecutorial misconduct.
This episode covers the recent events in the Gabby Petito case leading to the discovery of human remains in Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park that were subsequently identified as Brian Laundrie.
Since it is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I cover how this case ties into the need for Domestic Violence Awareness, particularly emotional abuse, and the impact of the Maid series on Netflix, based on Stephanie Land's bestselling memoir "Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay and a Mother's Will to Survive."

This is a story of incredibly beautiful people on the outside who crafted a perfect social media life, but underneath the veneer was a toxic relationship. On October 21, 2021 Ana Abulaban, 28, and her male friend Rayburn Barron, 29, were found murdered in the San Diego high rise where Ana and her husband Ali had previously lived together. Ali had amassed a social media following as JinnKid, after one of his videos parodying his favorite character from SkyRim went viral. In spite of their social media accounts portraying a "drama free relationship," the couple's marriage was in trouble, leading to the tragic murders. Ali has been charged with the crimes, and is currently pending trial.
